Reset sunken walkway pavers

Rebuild a small settled area so the path is supported and drains correctly.

Before you start

Stop for a deep void, leaking utility, major root heave or recurring settlement. Locate buried services before digging beyond the existing shallow bedding. Lift manageable loads, wear gloves and avoid dry cutting or dust clouds.

Tools and materials

Check the problem

  1. Find the cause of the dip

Check where water flows and whether edges have moved. Correct runoff or a failed edge first; a persistent void is not a simple leveling job.

  2. Record the pattern and height

Photograph the layout and mark removed edge pieces. Use adjacent sound paving to establish a continuous draining surface, not a level puddle.

Steps

  1. Lift beyond the low spot

Remove joint sand carefully and lift affected pavers plus enough surrounding ones to work on firm material. Stack them in order.

  2. Inspect the base

Remove loose bedding from the depression. If the base is soft, washed out or deeply hollow, find the cause before rebuilding.

  3. Restore firm support

Rebuild the deficient base with compatible compactable aggregate in thin layers, tamping each firmly. Do not fill a deep depression with loose bedding sand.

  4. Screed the bedding

Lay the system’s specified even bedding layer and screed to the required height, allowing for paver thickness and final seating. Keep the drainage fall.

  5. Relay the pattern

Return pavers with consistent joints. Seat using a rubber mallet or the system’s approved compaction method, protecting surfaces and checking height as you go.

  6. Fill joints and verify drainage

Apply compatible joint sand using its compaction and activation instructions. Sweep residue away first. Check for rocking and lips, then verify runoff after cure or settling time.

Tips

  1. Sand is not a deep structural fill

Repair the support layer rather than burying the depression.

  2. Follow the path’s intended fall

A perfectly level patch can still collect water.

  3. Follow the actual sand label

Polymeric products differ in weather, watering and compaction requirements.
