Repair a broken sprinkler supply pipe

Replace a damaged section of a PVC irrigation lateral with a pressure-rated repair coupling.

Before you start

Arrange utility locating before digging and identify private irrigation wires and pipes too. Shut off irrigation water and disable automatic cycles. Solvent primer and cement are flammable: ventilate, avoid ignition sources and protect skin and eyes. Never pressure-test PVC with compressed air.

Tools and materials

Check the problem

  1. Locate the actual break

A wet patch may be downhill from the leak. After locating utilities, briefly observe the zone from a safe position, then shut off water and disable the controller before exposing pipe.

  2. Match pipe and coupling

Read the pipe size and pressure marking, and confirm it is rigid PVC. Select a pressure-rated repair coupling for the pipe and operating pressure; plain no-stop DWV sleeves are not equivalent.

Steps

  1. Isolate and expose the pipe

Shut off the irrigation supply, disable scheduled watering and release pressure through the supported system method. Dig carefully by hand, exposing enough straight sound pipe to work without bending it.

  2. Plan the cutout

Use the coupling’s cutout dimensions and final extension position. Include any socket coupling and replacement pipe in the layout. The assembly must fit without stressing the pipe; follow any restraint requirements.

  3. Cut and prepare the ends

Make square cuts into sound pipe. Remove the broken section, deburr and bevel as instructed, then clean and dry the joining areas. Keep soil out and mark insertion depths.

  4. Assemble the repair

Follow the coupling’s exact joining order. Apply approved primer and cement only to designated solvent-weld surfaces, fully seat each joint and hold against push-out. Keep solvent off the moving shaft and seals.

  5. Allow a full pressure cure

Leave the assembly undisturbed and supported. Use the cement’s cure chart for pipe size, temperature, humidity and pressure—not its short handling/set time. Keep the controller disabled.

  6. Test before backfilling

Restore water gradually and bleed air through the irrigation system as specified. Run the zone and inspect every joint for leaks or movement. Shut off immediately if either appears. Once sound, bed and backfill without rocks pressing on the repair, then test sprinkler operation again.

Tips

  1. Do not improvise a sleeve

A drainage repair fitting may look suitable but lack a pressure rating.

  2. Set is not cure

A joint that feels firm can still fail when pressurized too soon.

  3. Keep it straight

Do not force pipe sideways to compensate for a cutout that is too short.
