Repair a small open carpet seam
Rebond a short separated seam without gluing the carpet to its cushion.
Home · 1–2 hr · Medium
Before you start
Use a purpose-made seaming iron and its stand, never a clothes iron on the carpet face. Keep the area dry, ventilated and free of children, pets and flammable products. Wear appropriate gloves and keep the hot base and cord away from skin, pile and cushion.
Tools and materials
- Carpet-compatible heat-bond seam tape and edge seam sealer
- Carpet seaming iron with stand, suitable seam roller, scissors, vacuum, smooth seam weight and heat-protective gloves
Check the problem
Check that the edges still meet
Gently bring the seam edges together without stretching. If there is a gap, buckling, missing pile or damaged backing, arrange a carpet repair rather than hiding it with adhesive.
Identify the seam system
Confirm the carpet and backing permit heat-bond tape repair and obtain the approved tape and edge sealer. Loose backing layers or an inaccessible long failed seam need a different repair.
Steps
Clear and open the short seam
Move furnishings and vacuum. Lift only enough of the already separated edges to reach the failed tape. If sound areas cannot be released without tearing backing, stop and get a carpet installer.
Remove failed tape and debris
Carefully remove loose tape and adhesive that prevent a flat bond, using the carpet/tape maker’s removal method. Do not soak the cushion in solvent or peel apart the carpet backing.
Seal the backing edges
Apply compatible edge sealer to the backing edges as directed, keeping it off the visible yarn. Let it reach the specified stage before heat seaming. This controls unraveling; it is not a substitute for seam tape.
Center fresh seam tape
Position the adhesive side up with equal width beneath each edge and the specified extension beyond the repair. Keep tape flat over the cushion, not glued to it. Rehearse the edge alignment.
Heat and join the seam
Set the iron to the tape’s recommended heat and test on spare tape first. Move it along the tape between the raised edges; immediately bring backing edges together behind it without trapping yarn or overlapping them. Press with a roller suitable for the pile.
Cool flat and inspect
Place the specified smooth seam weight over the joined area and allow complete cooling before traffic. Unplug and cool the iron in its stand. Check for gaps, trapped yarn, raised edges or loose bonding; do not keep reheating a failed repair.

Tips
No household glue
Glue on the pile or cushion creates a hard spot and complicates a later repair.
Use the lowest approved setting
Too much heat can damage backing or discolor carpet.
Some seams remain visible
Different pile directions or wear may show even when the backing joint is sound.
