Install a modular closet organizer

Fit a wall-hung track system with adjustable shelves and hanging space that clears the doors.

Home · 4–6 hr · Medium

Before you start

Check for wiring and plumbing before drilling and select the system’s approved anchors for the actual wall. Stop if the support construction is unknown or damaged. Use a stable stepladder and cap every sharp cut end; do not climb on shelves.

Tools and materials

Check the problem

  1. Measure usable space

Measure wall width, height and depth plus the clear door opening. Include hinges, sliding-door overlap and baseboards. Plan shelf and rod positions around the clothes you actually store.

  2. Confirm a supported system

Read the chosen kit’s track fixing, standard spacing and end-overhang limits. Identify solid studs or approved anchor locations; do not assume every adjustable shelving system uses the same fasteners.

Steps

  1. Clear and mark the layout

Remove old fittings safely and repair the wall. Mark track height level, standard positions and the shelf/rod layout. Check long garments and door clearance before drilling.

  2. Secure the hang track

Drill the specified pilot or anchor holes at verified safe positions. Hold the track level and fasten using the complete wall-type fixing schedule. Do not substitute drywall screws for specified hardware.

  3. Hang and secure standards

Hook each standard onto the track and space them within the kit limits. Plumb them and install their required wall fixings; hanging from the top alone may not be sufficient.

  4. Cut and cap the components

Measure each shelf and rod, allowing specified end clearances. Cut on a supported bench, file burrs and fit protective caps. Keep shelf cuts between wires where the system requires.

  5. Install brackets, shelves and rods

Seat matching brackets fully in the standards at equal heights. Lock shelves onto the brackets, add the correct rod supports and fit capped rods. Use the prescribed support at rod joints and corners.

  6. Load gradually and check

Confirm every bracket and lock is engaged, fixings are secure and the doors close freely. Distribute contents within the system’s limits; stop for movement or sag rather than adding more weight.

Tips

  1. Stay within one system

Similar-looking standards and brackets may not lock together.

  2. Plan around doors

A shelf hidden behind a fixed door overlap is difficult to use.

  3. Use the complete limit

A shelf rating assumes the prescribed supports, spacing and wall fixings.
