Install click-lock vinyl plank flooring

Lay a small room of floating vinyl planks with a sound base and room to move.

Before you start

Do not sand, cut or remove suspect old flooring or adhesive until asbestos risk is resolved. Check for concealed services before cutting. Wear eye protection and use dust control when sawing. Stop for moisture or a flexing subfloor.

Check the problem

  1. Confirm the product requirements

Read the exact locking, acclimation, underlay, moisture, flatness and expansion instructions. Attached-pad planks may prohibit extra underlay.

  2. Check the substrate

Use a long straightedge in several directions and inspect for dampness or movement. Correct defects with materials approved for the subfloor; do not bury them.

Steps

  1. Clear and condition the room

Remove furniture and trim carefully. Maintain the flooring maker’s room conditions and acclimate as required; inspect boards for damage.

  2. Prepare the base

Make the subfloor sound, clean, dry and flat to the stated tolerance. Vacuum thoroughly. Install only the required vapor layer or underlay with its specified seams.

  3. Plan rows and transitions

Measure room width and account for both perimeter gaps. Balance first and last row widths, avoid short end pieces, and plan the required stagger and doorway transitions.

  4. Prepare door-jamb clearance

If the product instructions call for it, use a flooring offcut as a height guide to undercut nonstructural wood casing. Preserve expansion space under the trim and avoid hidden fasteners.

  5. Start straight with spacers

Cut the starting edge as instructed and assemble the first rows using the correct lock sequence. Place spacers for the prescribed gap and check straightness.

  6. Build staggered rows

Angle or engage each joint exactly as the product requires. Check every seam before continuing. Use only approved blocks and tapping methods; never hammer the lock directly.

  7. Fit the last row and thresholds

Measure each final width including its expansion gap, cut and engage carefully. Secure transition tracks to the substrate as specified, without pinning the floating planks.

  8. Finish and inspect

Remove spacers. Fasten base trim to the wall, not the floor, and do not clamp the planks. Walk the room checking closed joints, clearance and no rocking; add furniture pads.

Tips

  1. Keep the perimeter free

Cabinets, fasteners and tight trim can trap a floating floor.

  2. Mix planks as you work

Spread repeated prints rather than clustering identical boards.

  3. Reject broken locks

A chipped locking lip will not heal when tapped harder.
