Yellow-footed Tortoise

The Amazonian motelo walks humid forest floors on yellow-scaled limbs, tracking fallen fruit and fungi through habitat where an open-country tortoise would look out of place.

Artwork inspired by Benedito Calixto

Yellow-footed Tortoises are large forest tortoises with elongated, high-domed dark shells whose scutes often have paler centers. Yellow to orange scales mark the head and sturdy limbs. In Peru the animal is often called motelo; it lives in humid Amazon forest and feeds broadly on fallen fruit, flowers, fungi, leaves, invertebrates, and carrion.

A red-footed tortoise can share some warm colors, so do not identify from one leg scale. Combine the forest setting, shell proportions, head and limb pattern, and several unobstructed views. Then let the animal finish its purposeful crossing: collection and consumption remain threats, and moving a healthy tortoise can place it away from food, shelter, or a familiar route.

Quick guide

Find naturally
Watch quiet Amazon trails after rain or near fallen fruit
Confirm cautiously
Use shell proportions, scale pattern, forest habitat, and several views

Recognize a motelo while leaving its route intact

Start with the forest context
Look along an established Amazon trail after rain or near naturally fallen fruit.
Check the complete pattern
Compare the elongated high-domed dark carapace, paler scute centers, and yellow-to-orange scales on both head and limbs.
Watch what the animal chooses
Notice whether the motelo follows fruit scent, browses fungi, crosses a trail, or enters litter and buttress-root cover.
Leave it exactly there
Avoid lifting, turning, washing, feeding, or moving a healthy tortoise—even across the path.

Good to know

Yellow-footed Tortoise is listed in CITES Appendix II with other tortoises, reflecting international trade controls. A “rescued” souvenir purchase can still reward the capture chain.
