Wupatki National Monument

Wupatki Pueblo, a ballcourt, blowhole, smaller communities, and Sunset Crater’s volcanic aftermath reveal a populous crossroads rather than an isolated red-stone ruin.

Wupatki National Monument

Artwork inspired by Fred Kabotie

After Sunset Crater’s eruptions in the late eleventh century, ash and cinders changed soils and settlement across the region. Wupatki Pueblo became one large node in a landscape of communities, exchange, farming, and travel connected to ancestors of today’s Hopi, Zuni, Diné, Havasupai, Hualapai, Yavapai, Apache, and Paiute peoples. Room counts matter less than the network visible from the site.

Start at the visitor center and Wupatki Pueblo, then choose two outlying sites rather than racing the full loop. Wukoki’s compact mass, Citadel’s broad view, and Lomaki’s Box Canyon setting make different architectural decisions visible. The scenic drive links with Sunset Crater, but fuel, food, water, and cellular service are limited along the route.

Good to know

The monument contains multiple sites spread along a long scenic loop, not one trailhead. Carry water, food, and fuel, and download the map before losing service. Entering closed rooms, climbing walls, or moving pottery sherds damages a living cultural landscape and is prohibited.
