Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum
Aircraft, spacecraft, restoration work, and Lowry Air Force Base history occupy a vast 1939 hangar where scale is immediately legible. Walk the hangar perimeter first to understand the collection’s chronology, then return to cockpits, engines, and interpretive stations.

Artwork inspired by Frank Vavra
The museum occupies Lowry Air Force Base’s immense 1939 Hangar No. 1, so the building is part of the story rather than a neutral container. Aircraft and spacecraft reveal different eras of military training, civilian engineering, restoration, and Colorado aviation when read against the hangar’s original scale.
Look upward as often as across: suspended aircraft expose wing shape and flight geometry, while engines, cockpits, and restoration areas reward a slower second circuit. Confirm simulator or cockpit access separately, and do not confuse this Lowry campus with Exploration of Flight at Centennial Airport.

Quick guide
- Opening question
- Walk the hangar perimeter once to understand the collection’s chronology and scale.
- Circuit of the full hangar
- Set beside it suspended aircraft and the original hangar structure explain flight as clearly as floor displays.
- Evidence to test
- Check simulator and cockpit-access schedules before arrival.
- Conditions check
- Check this is the Lowry museum; Exploration of Flight is a separate Centennial Airport campus.
Good to know
This card covers the Lowry Air & Space Museum, not Exploration of Flight. Special events can replace ordinary hours or admission. Most preserved aircraft are not open for entry; MaxFlight is onsite and first-come with height, weight, inversion, and epilepsy limits. Rescheduling and re-entry rules apply only at the same Wings location.
