Wildcat Den State Park
Sandstone formations, wooded ravines, and one of Iowa’s best-preserved gristmills share a small eastern-Iowa park.

Artwork inspired by Marvin Cone
Trails reach formations called the Devil’s Punch Bowl, Fat Man’s Squeeze, and Steamboat Rock, while the nearby Pine Creek Grist Mill and Melpine Schoolhouse preserve nineteenth-century community infrastructure. Informal names should not obscure the geology or engineering.
Walk the rock trail only when surfaces are dry, then tour the mill when volunteers open it. Unprotected drops and narrow passages require close child supervision; mill schedules are far more limited than park access.
Shape the visit around pine Creek Grist Mill and mill tours and wet-rock conditions, which reveal different scales of the same landscape. Budget 2–4 hours for Wildcat Den State Park: establish sandstone ravines and formations first, then reserve a final pass for pine Creek Grist Mill.
