West Baden Springs Hotel
The 1902 atrium, mineral-springs resort history, service spaces, decline, and rescue make this operating hotel one of Indiana’s most dramatic preservation stories.

Artwork inspired by Gustave Baumann
West Baden’s vast domed atrium was an engineering and hospitality sensation when the replacement hotel opened in 1902. Mineral-water culture, rail tourism, gambling, conventions, Black service labor, Jesuit and seminary years, later abandonment, and an exacting rescue all occupy the same structure. Its present luxury polish is therefore only the newest phase in a building that repeatedly changed use.
The atrium can be appreciated briefly, but a guided Indiana Landmarks tour explains structure, springs, ownership, and preservation. Behind-the-scenes tours on select dates reach service areas that make the hotel function as more than a dome. Remember that this remains an operating resort: public access is generous but not unlimited, guest privacy matters, and restaurants, lodging, casino amenities, and tours have separate costs.
