Vedauwoo Recreation Area
Vedauwoo turns 1.4-billion-year-old granite into rounded towers, squeeze-through corridors, off-width cracks, and a complete high-plains ecosystem at 8,200 feet.

Vedauwoo sits in the Sherman batholith, where roughly 1.4-billion-year-old granite cooled with vertical and horizontal joints. Water, ice, and chemical weathering widened those joints and rounded the exposed blocks into tors that look stacked but are part of a coherent rock mass. Turtle Rock Trail is the best first reading: its loop moves from open meadow into aspen, pine, beaver ponds, and close granite corridors without requiring climbing gear.
Technical climbers know Vedauwoo for abrasive, strenuous off-width cracks, but the same terrain rewards walkers who notice scale. Compare coarse pink feldspar crystals, black lichen, angular fresh breaks, and softened outer surfaces. Box Canyon provides a short fully accessible route from the picnic area; early summer also brings pasqueflower, phlox, biscuitroot, and other high-elevation wildflowers into the spaces between stone.
Altitude and exposure matter more than the mileage suggests. Afternoon lightning can turn granite summits and isolated trees into hazards, wind changes temperature quickly, and snow lingers or returns outside midsummer. Keep vehicles in designated day-use or campground parking, protect thin meadow soils by staying on established paths, and give climbers, nesting birds, and campers room rather than creating new approaches.

Quick guide
- Begin
- Use the Turtle Rock loop to connect meadow, beaver water, forest, and granite rather than stopping at the first boulders.
- Look closer
- Trace the right-angle joints beneath rounded outer surfaces; the contrast explains how apparently stacked towers formed.
- Share
- Pause below active routes, keep ropes and landings clear, and do not build new paths across thin meadow soil.
- Prepare
- At roughly 8, 200 feet, start early and leave exposed rock immediately when thunder develops.
Good to know
The main Google entity is Vedauwoo Campground because that is the reviewed public arrival for Turtle Rock. Recreation continues beyond the campground, but water, campground services, and some roads are seasonal. Download the Forest Service map before arriving; granite corridors can hide both the trail and an approaching storm.
