Essex County Turtle Back Zoo
A county zoo combines family-friendly animal encounters with useful chances to compare habitats and behavior.

Artwork inspired by Ben Shahn
Turtle Back Zoo presents more than 130 species in a compact but varied Essex County setting. Rather than treating it as a list to collect, choose a few habitats and ask what each enclosure is trying to provide: shade, water, climbing space, social group, or room to retreat.
Programs and seasonal extras change; general admission covers the core zoo, not every nearby park activity. The site is open rain or shine, so weather affects your own comfort as well as how visibly animals behave. Arrive with time for the return walk through the grounds, and check the operator map for accessible routes and any temporary exhibit work.
