Tumbling Creek Cavesnail
A translucent snail only millimeters long ties one dark Missouri stream to clean recharge water, stone biofilm, gray-bat nutrients, and choices made on the land above.

Artwork inspired by Charles W. Schwartz
Tumbling Creek Cavesnails are eyeless, unpigmented aquatic snails known only from the stream inside one Taney County cave. They cling to the undersides of stones in clear, fast-moving, silt-free water and graze biofilm supported partly by nutrients entering through a gray bat colony.
The Tumbling Creek Cave population collapsed after Taney County siltation, degraded recharge-water quality, and invasive ringed crayfish altered that narrow Missouri habitat. Recharge restoration, crayfish control, and surrogate substrates have improved conditions, but abundance remains extremely low. The responsible public encounter is therefore with the karst recovery story—not a search inside restricted cave passage.
- Entire range
- One cave stream in Taney County, Missouri
- Body
- Tiny, translucent, eyeless, and unpigmented
- Federal status
- Endangered and still extremely scarce
Quick guide
- Follow water downhill
- Connect sinkholes, runoff, recharge, and the cave stream
- Leave the animal unseen
- Do not enter restricted passages, lift stones, or publish coordinates
Understand the cavesnail from the recharge landscape above
- Start at the surface
- Read the Taney County karst landscape for sinkholes, losing streams, thin soils, roads, pasture, and development.
- Follow energy into darkness
- Trace nutrients from the surface and gray bat colony to cave microbes, stone biofilm, and the grazing cavesnail.
- Separate recovery actions
- Compare recharge-area restoration, sediment reduction, invasive-crayfish control, and surrogate substrates.
- Keep observation indirect
- Use U.S.
Good to know
A surface spill need not enter a river to reach this snail. In karst terrain, a sinkhole or losing stream can route contaminated water directly into the cave’s recharge system.
Notice these
- Millimeter-scale translucent shell
- No eyes or pigment
- Fast silt-free cave stream
- Single-cave global range
