Toolesboro Mounds National Historic Landmark
Well-preserved Hopewell burial mounds and a small museum protect evidence of ceremony and exchange along the Mississippi corridor.

Artwork inspired by Mildred Pelzer
The surviving conical mounds date roughly from 200 BCE to 300 CE and belong to a broad Hopewell interaction sphere expressed through earthworks, materials, and mortuary practice. Agriculture and development destroyed other mounds, making the protected group especially important.
Visit the museum before the grounds, remain on marked paths, and never climb or probe a mound. Quiet scale is part of the experience; there is no need to exaggerate shape to recognize cultural significance.
