The Fort at No. 4

A reconstructed frontier settlement interprets colonial conflict and survival

The Fort at No. 4

Artwork inspired by Abbott Handerson Thayer

A reconstructed frontier settlement interprets colonial conflict and survival. Timber buildings, gardens, hearths, trade, military history, and living-history events recreate a fortified Connecticut River community. What distinguishes it locally is the close relationship among palisade walls, hearth interiors, and Connecticut River frontier, each carrying a different part of the story.

Visit during interpretation if possible, then separate documented history from the choices required by reconstruction. Open days are seasonal and event schedules strongly change what can be entered or demonstrated. The payoff comes from noticing how Connecticut River frontier changes the reading of hearth interiors, especially after the main attraction has made its first impression.
