Tenement Museum
Enter the Lower East Side through the rooms and choices of its former residents.

Artwork inspired by Everett Shinn
The Tenement Museum makes immigration and urban life tangible in two actual Orchard Street tenements. Instead of wandering a gallery, you choose a guided apartment story or neighborhood walk. Rooms reconstructed from records and oral histories show how families worked, cooked, shared space, and navigated changing laws. Ordinary domestic decisions connect to much larger debates about who belongs in a city.
Begin at the visitor center at 103 Orchard Street even if your tour enters another building. Tours have distinct eras and themes; compare them before booking rather than assuming one ticket covers everything. The surrounding Lower East Side streets are part of the visit, so leave time for a walk afterward. Apartment interiors cannot be visited independently.
