Steep Rock Preserve
Trails loop beside the Shepaug River through hemlock forest, old carriage roads, a former railroad tunnel, and the dramatic Steep Rock overlook.

Artwork inspired by Eric Sloane
The preserve grew from conservation efforts around a wooded Shepaug River bend. The abandoned railroad bed and curved tunnel show how infrastructure once cut through the valley, while the overlook explains the landform from above. Multiple loops make the area more complex than one tunnel photograph.
Use the preserve map to choose mileage and parking; several lots serve different approaches. The tunnel is dark, wet, and icy in cold seasons, so carry a light and do not enter during hazardous conditions. Trails remain natural, and the river is not a supervised recreation area. River level strongly affects both scenery and practical footing.

Good to know
Navigation apps may direct visitors toward private roads or the wrong preserve entrance. Download the land trust’s map, use designated lots, and never depend on the tunnel as the only route back.
