Spring Mill State Park

Caves, sinking streams, a restored gristmill village, old forest, Gus Grissom museum, and a lake reveal how southern Indiana geology shaped work and settlement.

Spring Mill State Park

Artwork inspired by Gustave Baumann

Spring Mill links karst geology directly to human use. Water emerging from caves powered mills and encouraged a nineteenth-century industrial village; restored buildings and demonstrations interpret that system. Elsewhere, cave streams, sinkholes, forest, lake, and the memorial museum for astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom broaden the park without erasing the geological thread connecting its oldest stories.

Begin at the village when interpreters and the mill are active, then follow the water upstream conceptually toward springs and caves. Cave access is seasonal and tightly managed for bat protection and safety; never assume a tour from an old schedule. The Grissom Memorial is a focused indoor contrast, especially useful in poor weather. Trail mileage understates rough karst terrain, so match routes to current conditions.

Quick guide

Start at the mill
See how flow, wheel, gearing, and grain made the village economically possible.
Trace the karst
Connect springs, caves, sinkholes, and disappearing streams as one groundwater system.

How to follow water through the park

Start at the mill
See how flow, wheel, gearing, and grain made the village economically possible.
Trace the karst
Connect springs, caves, sinkholes, and disappearing streams as one groundwater system.
Respect cave controls
Use only authorized tours and current decontamination rules that protect bats.
Add Grissom thoughtfully
Treat the astronaut museum as an Indiana life story, not an unrelated bonus room.

Good to know

Open daily 7 a.m.–11 p.m. Standard vehicle fees apply; cave boat tours and lodging cost extra and operate seasonally. Lots serve the village, inn, lake, and memorial. Accessible facilities and selected village routes are available, while caves, historic thresholds, and most trails have physical constraints.
