Soldiers & Sailors Monument
Monument Circle’s 284-foot limestone landmark combines sculpture, fountains, civic ritual, an observation level, and changing ideas about how Indiana remembers war.

Artwork inspired by Janet Scudder
Dedicated in 1902, the monument honors Indiana participants in conflicts from the Revolution through the Spanish-American War and helped define Indianapolis around Monument Circle. Sculptural groups for War, Peace, the Dying Soldier, and the Homefront turn military commemoration into a public narrative. The circle’s festivals, protests, daily traffic, and holiday lighting keep revising how the monument functions.
The exterior is the dependable experience. Walk a complete circuit to compare the four corner figures, sculptural groups, inscriptions, fountains, and how businesses address the circle. The interior and observation level currently open on Fridays, but access can change with maintenance and events; verify before making the skyline view essential. The Indiana War Memorial several blocks north houses the principal military-history exhibits.
