Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail
Nearly 350 miles connect northern Kentucky to Tennessee through Daniel Boone National Forest, Big South Fork, road walks, arches, river crossings, and resupply gaps.

Artwork inspired by Harlan Hubbard
The Sheltowee Trace rewards hikers less as a single conquest than as a sequence of sharply different landscapes. Daniel Boone forest, gorge and river corridors, plateau country, and stretches of road walking make route reading as important as endurance; the white turtle blaze is a thread through changing terrain and jurisdictions.
For a first encounter, choose a signed day section near a major recreation area, then compare the northern terminus, Red River Gorge, or Big South Fork on later outings. Longer passages demand current maps and realistic plans for water, resupply, road exposure, river conditions, legal camping, transportation, and the differing rules of each managing agency.
