Seattle Art Museum

At Seattle Art Museum, the collection galleries and rotating special exhibitions connects global art interpreted through a Pacific Northwest institution.

Seattle Art Museum

Artwork inspired by Mark Tobey

Seattle Art Museum’s downtown galleries combine global collections with rotating exhibitions in a building whose installations often change the route. The Asian Art Museum and Olympic Sculpture Park are separate Seattle sites, not additional wings.

A focused visit pairs one collection area with one temporary exhibition, then compares how labels, display, and architecture change the reading of objects. Check the active exhibition and ticket type before choosing the downtown museum.

How to read Seattle Art Museum on site

Confirm the correct SAM site
Use the downtown museum for the collection or exhibition selected; do not confuse it with the Asian Art Museum or Olympic Sculpture Park.
Choose one collection thread
Follow a material, region, or historical question across several galleries instead of sampling a single object in every room.
Add one temporary exhibition
Compare its curatorial voice, lighting, and label language with the permanent collection thread chosen first.
Use the Union Street arrival
Check exhibition admission and hours, then use the assisted-door entrance and elevator connection from the 1301 Garage when needed.

Good to know

The downtown museum, Seattle Asian Art Museum, and Olympic Sculpture Park are separate sites. SAM’s MARKET café is closed for remodeling; the announced Bar Dojo opening is not yet a dependable visitor amenity. Garage pickup/drop-off is free for 10 minutes, while curb zones operate only 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
