Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument
Abo, Quarai, and Gran Quivira preserve Pueblo towns beside seventeenth-century mission churches, making encounter, coercion, labor, drought, and endurance visible across a whole valley.

Artwork inspired by Tonita Peña
This monument is three separate places, not one ruin. Abo, Quarai, and Gran Quivira were substantial Pueblo communities before Franciscan missions imposed new buildings, labor systems, religion, and political pressures in the seventeenth century. The adjoining masonry makes coexistence, adaptation, resistance, and unequal power physically impossible to separate.
Begin at the Mountainair headquarters for orientation, then choose at least two units. Quarai offers a dramatic church and spring-fed setting; Abo reveals a broad community plan; Gran Quivira is the largest and most remote, with multiple pueblos and churches. Driving between them is part of the visit, so a complete circuit takes most of a day.

Good to know
The headquarters in Mountainair is an orientation stop, not the monument’s main ruin. Each unit has separate roads and hours, and Gran Quivira adds the most driving. Download the NPS map, carry water, and verify seasonal gates before attempting all three in one day.
