Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums
Spiegel Grove combines Hayes’s 31-room home, presidential museum, research library, tomb, and wooded grounds—one of the earliest presidential library complexes in the country.

Artwork inspired by Howard Chandler Christy
The site is more useful than a chronological presidential gallery because politics, collecting, family life, and memorialization occupy separate but connected buildings. The museum covers the Civil War, contested election of 1876, presidency, reform commitments, and the limits of Reconstruction policy. In the home, several generations and a large body of original furnishings keep Rutherford and Lucy Hayes from becoming isolated marble figures.
Allow enough time for both the self-guided museum and an hour-long guided house tour; tickets permit a return, so the grounds can divide the visit. The tomb and mature trees make Spiegel Grove a landscape of commemoration, while the free research library signals that this is also a working archive. House tours leave on the hour and can fill, so anchor the day around the tour rather than treating it as an optional last stop.

- Notice how trees, drives, gates, and burial place construct memory.
Good to know
Museum galleries are self-guided, but the Hayes Home is available only on a scheduled hour-long tour. The library follows a separate research schedule and should not be assumed open whenever the museum is.
