Russian Bishop’s House

Artwork inspired by Eustace Ziegler

A rare Russian colonial building reveals religion, empire, education, and Native entanglement. Completed in 1842, the restored log building contains chapel, residence, school history, and material evidence of Russian America. Its survival makes colonial administration physically legible at domestic scale.

Take the ranger-led upper-floor tour if offered, then compare the chapel’s craft with the working and educational rooms below. The upper floor is reached only on guided tours and is not step-free; winter closure and shoulder-season staffing are normal. A slower reading of Chapel of Annunciation makes log construction more intelligible and keeps the visit anchored in this particular Alaska setting.
