Prairie Spirit Trail
A 51-mile rail-trail makes southeastern Kansas’s prairie, farms, woods, and small towns readable at bicycle speed.

Artwork inspired by Gordon Parks
Prairie Spirit Trail State Park runs along a former railroad from Ottawa through Garnett to Iola, with eight pocket parks and a connection to the Southwind Rail Trail. The corridor shifts between open agriculture, shaded riparian vegetation, and town streets, making section choice more important than the apparently simple straight line.
Garnett works well as a midpoint base; Ottawa connects to Flint Hills Trail, and Iola continues south toward Humboldt. Select distance around water, shade, wind, and return transport. The route is identified as ADA accessible, but specific trailhead transitions and temporary maintenance conditions should still be checked.

Plan a useful visit
- Corridor
- Notice where prairie, creek woodland, and agriculture replace one another.
- Rail history
- Set beside it grades remain gentle, but wind can create the climb the railroad avoided.
- Town
- Use pocket parks as deliberate rests, not just pass-through points.
- Season
- Summer shade and winter water shutdowns alter which section is comfortable
Good to know
At Ottawa and Iola, the trail becomes part of a much larger connected network, so a 51-mile park can anchor a considerably longer journey.
