Pokagon State Park
Lake James, rolling moraine, wetlands, hardwood forest, Potawatomi Inn, trails, and a refrigerated toboggan run make Pokagon an unusually strong four-season park.

Artwork inspired by John Elwood Bundy
Pokagon occupies terrain shaped by retreating ice: kettle lakes, moraines, wetlands, and rolling woods meet Lake James. Summer emphasizes swimming, boating, riding, and trails; winter transforms the park around a refrigerated toboggan run capable of operating without natural snow. Potawatomi Inn gives the landscape a year-round base, while the park’s name should prompt attention to the Potawatomi people displaced from Indiana.
Choose the season deliberately. In winter, reserve enough time for toboggan logistics, cold exposure, and crowds; riders face eligibility and safety rules. In warmer months, combine lake access with a trail that reveals glacial topography rather than staying entirely on shore. The nature center provides context for wildlife and landforms. Saddle-barn, boat, beach, and toboggan operations each depend on separate schedules.
