Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
Victorian glasshouses, changing flower shows, and sustainable design make Phipps more than a greenhouse stroll.

Artwork inspired by Henry Koerner
Phipps began as a gift to Pittsburgh in 1893. Its linked glass rooms invite a walk through different growing conditions: move from the Palm Court into tropical and desert spaces, noticing how light, humidity, and plant form change. These are cultivated compositions rather than untouched habitats; labels and show themes connect their beauty to botanical questions.
Seasonal flower shows change the experience, while the Center for Sustainable Landscapes makes Phipps's environmental ambitions visible beyond its historic glass. Friday's late opening gives the rooms another atmosphere. Buy a timed ticket if your arrival is fixed; walk-ins are welcome when available. Sit and look rather than rushing room to room, and check visitor notices if a particular garden matters to you.
