Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum
USS Yorktown, USS Laffey, aircraft, flight and engine spaces, a Vietnam support-base exhibit, and the Medal of Honor Museum make naval scale physically legible.

Artwork inspired by Boyd Saunders
Yorktown and Laffey become most intelligible when treated as working systems rather than enormous containers for aircraft and weapons. Berths, galleys, machinery, navigation spaces, ventilation, and repair areas reveal the coordinated labor behind naval operations. Moving between the carrier and destroyer also makes differences in scale, vulnerability, and combat organization physically apparent.
Begin below decks before stepping onto Yorktown’s flight deck, so the aircraft overhead can be understood through the people and infrastructure required to launch, recover, fuel, and maintain them. Selective routing matters: long distances, heat, narrow doors, steep ladders, and confined compartments can shape the experience. A marked accessible route reaches principal Yorktown levels, but many historic spaces remain unreachable without stairs.

Quick guide
- Human-scale clue
- Sleeping, eating, and maintenance spaces explain the ships better than exterior dimensions.
- Mobility reality
- Many historic compartments cannot be made step-free even when main visitor areas are accessible.
Treat each vessel as a working system
- Start below decks
- Crew berths, machinery, galleys, and passageways establish daily life before the flight deck spectacle.
- Choose one aircraft
- Connect its mission with launch, recovery, fuel, maintenance, and people aboard the carrier.
- Cross to Laffey
- Compare destroyer scale, vulnerability, and combat organization with the much larger Yorktown.
- Budget for stairs
- Ladders, narrow doors, heat, and long distances make selective routing essential.
Good to know
Begin below the flight deck so the ship’s labor systems explain the aircraft above.
