Patapsco Valley State Park — Avalon
The Avalon approach opens a historic river valley of trails, mill remains, and a swinging bridge toward Orange Grove.

Artwork inspired by Francis Guy
Patapsco Valley State Park runs through distinct areas along the river; Avalon is one practical beginning, not a pin representing all 32 miles. Paths connect recreation with traces of rail, mills, and other industry that occupied the valley. The suspended pedestrian bridge at Orange Grove is a destination in its own right, and the river’s bends make an urban outing feel expansive.
Begin with a chosen area and trail surface. Hiking routes vary in length and share sections with cyclists or riders, while floods can alter access. The valley’s industrial past is more than ruins: work, transport, water power, and destructive floods shaped what remains. Arrive early on busy weekends, when developed areas may close after filling.
