Palisade Falls Trail
A short paved trail in Hyalite Canyon climbs to a waterfall spilling over a dark wall of volcanic rock.

Artwork inspired by Gennie DeWeese
The rock face matters as much as water volume. Cooling fractures created the column-like structure, while freeze-thaw, runoff, and seasonal ice continue to shape the cliff and cascade.
The road and picnic area are seasonal and winter conditions can make pavement deceptive. Stay away from the cliff base and ice, bring layers, and combine the stop with a deliberate Hyalite plan rather than assuming every canyon road is open. Before leaving, return to About one mile round trip. It is the clearest anchor for connecting the visit with Paved. Taken together, About one mile round trip and Paved provide a practical test for what is distinctive here and what belongs to the wider regional story.

Palisade Falls Trail: begin and time season
- Begin
- Read the volcanic wall before focusing on falling water before moving into the wider story.
- Time season
- Expect runoff, low water, or ice to change the scene.
- Stay back
- Rockfall and ice make the cliff base unsafe.
- Check road
- Verify Hyalite Canyon access before leaving Bozeman.
Good to know
A paved surface does not make this a year-round easy walk: the access road and trail can hold snow or ice, and runoff changes the falls dramatically. Check conditions and arrive early because trailhead parking is limited.
