Pacific Science Center

Pacific Science Center focuses the visit on hands-on science and arches.

Artwork inspired by Doris Totten Chase

Pacific Science Center works best as a sequence of experiments, not a race through every interactive. Pick one question—how living systems adapt, how light and sound carry information, or how engineers test a design—and use several exhibits to revise your first answer. The Tropical Butterfly House adds a living environment where observation matters more than button-pushing.

Minoru Yamasaki’s white arches and courtyard pools were created for the 1962 World’s Fair, so the campus is itself a lesson in how an era imagined science and the future. Compare that monumental civic optimism with today’s hands-on exhibits, then ask what changed in the questions science centers choose to foreground.

Daytime planetarium and laser programs are included with admission but require separate limited-capacity timed tickets; IMAX and evening Laser Dome shows cost extra. Enter from the North Entrance near the Armory and Mural Amphitheater, not the closed Denny Way entrance, and secure timed inventory early.

Build an evidence-led visit to Pacific Science Center

Begin
Choose one hands-on science question before adding a timed planetarium, laser, or butterfly experience.
Do not miss
The arches, Tropical Butterfly House, planetarium, and laser experiences.
Look closer
Compare Minoru Yamasaki’s arches with the scale and movement of the exhibits beneath them.
Plan for

Good to know

Annual maintenance can close the center for several days. General admission includes daytime planetarium and laser shows, but each requires a limited-capacity timed ticket split between advance member inventory and onsite distribution. Re-entry is allowed with a ticket or wristband.
