Oregon Museum of Science and Industry

Experiment halls, a Cold War submarine, a planetarium, and rotating science exhibitions make OMSI a place to test ideas rather than merely read about them.

Artwork inspired by Charles Heaney

OMSI is several visits sharing one building: hands-on physics and chemistry, rotating science exhibitions, laboratories, planetarium and theater programs, and a Cold War submarine. Start by choosing one timed attraction, then build the flexible halls around it; trying to do every component usually produces queues rather than understanding.

USS Blueback makes engineering physical in a way a gallery cannot—tight hatches, steep stairs, machinery, bunks, and a small crew's shared environment—but its age, height, and mobility restrictions are absolute. Visitors who cannot board still have a complete accessible museum route, so treat the submarine as an optional specialized product rather than the test of whether the day was successful.

Quick guide

Route question
Which timed experience anchors the visit?
Final evidence
One complete predict-test-explain cycle in a hands-on hall

Build an evidence-led visit to Oregon Museum of Science and Industry

Choose the clock
Select the submarine, planetarium, theater, or featured exhibition time before exploring open halls.
Test one system
Stay with one hands-on phenomenon long enough to predict, test, and revise an explanation.
Make the access decision
Check Blueback age, height, hatch, and stair requirements before purchasing its tour.
Leave a buffer
Labs have shorter schedules and timed queues can slip; preserve time for one unhurried final hall.

Good to know

Every age needs a ticket. Labs can keep shorter hours than the museum. USS Blueback visitors must be age 3+, at least 36 inches tall, pass the practice hatch, self-navigate steep stairs, and cannot be carried; wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers are prohibited.
