Old Stone House Museum & Historic Village
A four-story granite dormitory anchors a village-scale history of the Northeast Kingdom

Artwork inspired by Ogden Pleissner
A four-story granite dormitory anchors a village-scale history of the Northeast Kingdom Period rooms, furniture, tools, archives, outbuildings, and the extraordinary 1836 Athenian Hall interpret education, settlement, and community life. The museum’s vertical building and surrounding village make institutional ambition visible in a landscape often described only as remote.
Tour the Stone House with a guide if offered, then walk the village slowly enough to understand relationships among school, church, home, and road. The museum is seasonal, upper floors require stairs, and special programs may be the only access to some buildings. Its quiet setting makes the scale of Alexander Twilight’s educational project more—not less—striking.
