Old Salem Museums & Gardens

Original buildings, trades, gardens, archaeology, and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts reveal a planned Moravian town and the Black labor embedded within it.

Old Salem Museums & Gardens

Artwork inspired by Hobson Pittman

Old Salem’s dense architectural record reveals how Moravian residents organized labor, worship, education, and communal life through distinctive institutions. Its trades and gardens become most illuminating when read not as quaint survivals, but as evidence of apprenticeship, gender expectations, changing church rules, and material networks that reached beyond the town.

That broader reading must include the Black labor and lives embedded throughout Salem. The Hidden Town Project draws on archaeology, documents, and descendant collaboration to restore enslaved and free African Americans to the landscape’s interpretation, while MESDA’s furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and paintings place local experience within the wider creative and commercial world of the early South.

Connect tools and demonstration to material sources, apprenticeship, and the person performing the labor.
Find Hidden Town
Seek archaeology and interpretation of Black residents across the landscape, not in one isolated room.
Save time for MESDA
Decorative arts reveal regional skill and exchange that the streetscape alone cannot show.

Good to know

Old Salem is a living district with public streets as well as ticketed interiors. A photograph of the square is free; interpreters, trade spaces, and MESDA require the correct admission and operating day.
