Natural Bridge State Resort Park
Multiple trails climb through hemlock, cliff base, narrow passages, and weathered sandstone to a bridge shaped by erosion, while a seasonal lift offers a less strenuous approach.

Artwork inspired by Nellie Meadows
Natural Bridge becomes more intelligible when experienced from below as well as above. At its base, the sandstone span reveals its thickness, bedding, weathering, and scale; from the top and nearby viewpoints, its position within the broader Red River Gorge landscape becomes clearer. Hemlock woods and narrow passages enrich the ascent.
Choose the upward and downward routes independently according to grade, steps, squeeze passages, and seasonal skylift service. Hiking one way and using the lift the other can provide useful contrast, though the lift does not make the summit fully step-free. Arrive early, expect slick stone after rain, and remain within marked areas near exposed drop-offs.

Quick guide

- Crowd tactic
- Early arrival reduces congestion at narrow passages and the most popular viewpoints.
Choose how to earn the sandstone span
- Study the route options
- Trail grade, steps, squeeze passages, and skylift service create very different ascents.
- Walk beneath first
- The opening reveals thickness, bedding, weathering, and true scale better than the top alone.
- Cross with care
- The exposed upper surface has drop-offs and limited barriers; stay within marked areas.
- Add one overlook
- A nearby viewpoint can explain the arch’s position within the Red River Gorge landscape.
