Melrose at Natchez National Historical Park
A furnished Greek Revival estate, surviving outbuildings, grounds, and guided interpretation expose wealth, enslavement, domestic work, and postwar change.

Artwork inspired by John McCrady
Melrose survives with an unusually complete group of buildings, furnishings, and landscape features, making it possible to study how plantation wealth depended on enslaved labor. The house tour should be read together with kitchens, quarters, service circulation, gardens, and records; otherwise the beauty of intact interiors can obscure the coercive system that maintained them.
The National Historical Park also includes other Natchez resources, but Melrose is the primary developed visitor site. Interior access depends on ranger tours and staffing, while grounds may follow a different schedule. Ask what is original, restored, reconstructed, or moved, and leave time to compare the formal front approach with the less theatrical work routes.

Good to know
House entry is normally by ranger-led tour and can be limited by staffing, weather, or preservation work even when grounds are open. Natchez has many mansion tours with different missions; confirm that you are booking the National Park Service Melrose experience.
