Mount Timpanogos via Timpooneke Trail
A long alpine route climbs meadows, switchbacks, and a final exposed ridge to the 11,752-foot summit of Mount Timpanogos.

Artwork inspired by John Hafen
The Timpooneke route reaches Mount Timpanogos through forests, wildflower basins, and high switchbacks before a rugged summit ridge. Mileage, nearly five thousand feet of climbing, altitude, and rapidly changing weather make it one of Utah’s defining but serious day hikes.
Begin well before sunrise only if equipped for navigation and wildlife encounters in darkness. Stay on constructed switchbacks, yield to mountain goats without approaching them, and descend immediately when thunder builds. Summit success never justifies crossing snow or exposed rock beyond your skill.

- Turn below the ridge when storms build.
- Give space
- Never crowd mountain goats.
Good to know
Weekend trailhead congestion can begin before dawn. American Fork Canyon fees and seasonal road controls are separate from the hike. Snowfields may persist into summer, and the summit hut is not dependable shelter from lightning.
