Mount Mansfield via Sunset Ridge
An exposed ridge reaches Vermont’s highest summit over fragile alpine ground

Artwork inspired by Vermont WPA mural tradition
An exposed ridge reaches Vermont’s highest summit over fragile alpine ground The Sunset Ridge–Laura Cowles network climbs steep forest, open rock, and the distinctive Mansfield profile to the 4,393-foot Chin. Above treeline, weather, navigation, and foot placement matter immediately; rare tundra vegetation survives because hikers stay on durable rock.
Ascend the better-marked ridge in stable weather, carry layers and water, and retreat below treeline before thunder or cloud removes safe travel. This is a strenuous mountain route with scrambling, exposure, slippery rock, and small parking lots. It is unsuitable during ice, storms, or heavy mud.
