Mount Magazine State Park
A forested plateau rises to 2,753 feet with cliff overlooks, hang-gliding launches, rare butterflies, trails, and a mountaintop lodge.

Artwork inspired by John Bell Jr.
Mount Magazine is a broad mesa-like plateau whose Signal Hill summit reaches 2,753 feet, the highest point in Arkansas. Its real drama lies along the escarpment: Cameron Bluff, overlooks, and launch areas open across the Petit Jean River Valley, while upland forest, glades, and cooler microclimates support distinctive plants and the rare Diana fritillary butterfly.
Stop at the visitor center before choosing between the easy Signal Hill walk, rim trails, or longer descent-and-climb routes. Fog, wind, lightning, heat, and rapidly changing visibility can matter more than mileage. The summit sign is in woods rather than at a panoramic cliff, so pair it with an overlook instead of expecting one location to provide both elevation proof and the park’s best view.

Good to know
Driving to the lodge does not put you at the Signal Hill marker, and reaching the marker does not provide the famous open view. Plan the two stops separately, carry a layer even in warm seasons, and leave exposed rims before thunderstorms or dangerous wind develops.
