Monon Trail

The paved Monon links downtown Indianapolis, Broad Ripple, Nora, Carmel, and Westfield through neighborhoods, business districts, public art, parks, and surviving rail traces.

Monon Trail

Artwork inspired by Robert Indiana

The Monon is transportation infrastructure as much as recreation. Built along a former Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway corridor, it now connects neighborhoods, shopping districts, schools, parks, and adjacent regional trails. The experience changes block by block: dense pedestrian activity in Broad Ripple, art and redevelopment in Carmel, quieter suburban stretches, and urban approaches farther south.

Choose a destination and turnaround rather than riding until tired. The trail is busy, shared, and crossed by streets and driveways, so speed belongs on open stretches, not around families or storefront zones. Transit, food, repair stops, and parking are plentiful in some sections and sparse in others. After dark, local hours, lighting, and personal comfort differ by jurisdiction.

How to travel a working urban trail

Pick a district pair
Build a route between real stops—park, depot, café, art, or transit—not abstract mileage.
Yield visibly
Slow for children, dogs, walkers, crossings, and congested commercial sections.
Watch every street
A greenway does not remove turning vehicles, driveways, or signal decisions.
Find the railroad
Look for grades, bridge alignments, depots, and industrial remnants beneath redevelopment.

Good to know

The trail is free and generally open daily under local park hours, which vary by jurisdiction. Numerous public lots and street access points exist, but some are intended for district customers rather than trail users. Most segments are accessible; busy intersections, construction detours, crowding, and differing lighting require route-specific judgment.
