Mission San Xavier del Bac
Baroque sculpture, painted saints, lime-white towers, conservation work, and continuous worship stand on Tohono O’odham land at a church that is neither an abandoned ruin nor a museum set.

Artwork inspired by Michael Chiago
San Xavier’s late-eighteenth-century church is celebrated for its Mexican Baroque interior, but architecture cannot be separated from the Tohono O’odham community that has sustained the parish. Sculpture, painted decoration, devotional objects, conservation layers, and the unfinished east tower record Native labor, Franciscan missionization, Mexican craft traditions, and ongoing Catholic practice.
Enter as a guest in an active church. Services, funerals, baptisms, and community needs take priority over tourism, and interior access can change without notice. Dress and speak accordingly, never photograph worshipers without consent, and use the small museum or guided interpretation when available. Food vendors outside may be community-run and are separate from church hours.

Good to know
This is a functioning Catholic parish on Tohono O’odham land, not a ticketed museum. Weddings, funerals, Mass, restoration, or community events can close the interior without tourist notice. Donations support preservation; modest dress and quiet conduct matter more than completing a photo checklist.
