Milwaukee Public Museum
Dioramas, dinosaurs, butterflies, world cultures, and the Streets of Old Milwaukee fill a century-old institution now preparing collections for a new museum.

Artwork inspired by Aaron Bohrod
The museum’s immersive dioramas are historical objects in their own right. Habitats, taxidermy, painted backdrops, lighting, and labels reveal how earlier museums staged knowledge, while newer interpretation asks better questions about ecology, collecting, and the communities represented. The butterfly wing supplies a living counterpoint to rooms built around preserved specimens.
A new museum is under development, and objects are being moved or taken off display in phases. That makes this visit unusually time-sensitive without making it disposable: prioritize the Streets of Old Milwaukee, European Village, Third Planet, and the habitat halls that matter to you, then read closure notices before arrival rather than assuming every longtime favorite remains visible.

Look at the exhibit and the history of exhibiting
- Enter the old streets slowly
- Notice scale, sound, shop windows, and forced perspective—not only the nostalgic street scene they produce.
- Read a diorama twice
- First identify the animals and habitat; then inspect how painted distance, mounted bodies, and labels construct authority.
- Add a living system
- Use the butterfly wing to compare controlled habitat, behavior, and conservation with static display.
- Check exhibit status
- Collection moves for the future museum can close individual halls even while the building remains open.
