At Lime Kiln Point State Park, the lighthouse viewpoint and quiet listening for marine mammals connects rocky Salish Sea shoreline, a historic lighthouse, and shore-based whale watching. Pause quietly for blows, splashes, calls, and changes in bird behavior.
Bring binoculars and treat wildlife sightings as uncertain, not scheduled. Treat any marine-mammal encounter as a possibility, not a scheduled event.
- Setting

- Pause for blows, splashes, calls, and changing bird behavior
Watch the Salish Sea without promising whales
- Set up at the lighthouse
- Begin at the Lime Kiln lighthouse or a signed rocky viewpoint and scan Haro Strait in sections rather than chasing every boat or splash.
- Let sound guide the scan
- Listen for a blow, breach, tail slap, or abrupt bird movement, then use binoculars to check the same patch of open water.
- Read the moving water
- Current seams, kelp edges, seabirds, and vessel traffic while treating Southern Resident killer whales as a possibility, never a scheduled performance.
- Keep the shore safe
- Use established viewing rock, avoid wet cliff edges, and check San Juan Island State Parks notices for parking or trail constraints before arrival.
Good to know
Whales are never guaranteed; scan from established shore viewpoints and keep well back from wet rock and cliff edges.
