Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail
Climb from Ohiopyle into a 70-mile mountain footpath with shelter-to-shelter possibilities.

Artwork inspired by Andrew Wyeth
The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail runs along the ridge from Ohiopyle toward the Conemaugh Gorge area, marked by yellow blazes and punctuated by shelters. It is a genuine backcountry route rather than a flat rail trail: elevation, rock, and weather shape even a day hike. The mapped Mile 0 marker locates the southern start near Ohiopyle.
A short outing can turn around at a viewpoint or trail junction, while a multi-day traverse demands reserved shelter or camping plans. The state park manages designated overnight areas; do not assume dispersed camping is permitted. Carry water, a trail map, and an exit plan, especially when sections become remote from roads.
