Kingwood Center Gardens
Formal terraces, woodland paths, seasonal borders, a historic French Provincial mansion, greenhouse, and contemporary Garden Gateway fill a 47-acre Mansfield estate.

Artwork inspired by Clyde Singer
Kingwood began as the home of Charles Kelley King, an Ohio Brass executive, and opened to the public after his death. Its identity comes from a productive tension: Kingwood Hall and terraces preserve an early-twentieth-century estate, while the Garden Gateway, display greenhouse, trial beds, woodland, and horticultural programs make it an active civic garden rather than a sealed period house.
Follow the terraces downhill from the mansion, then let the route loosen through woodland and seasonal plantings before returning through the greenhouse. Peacocks roam the grounds and are memorable but should not be chased or fed. Interior mansion access and special displays can change with events; the gardens remain the core experience, and spring bulbs, summer borders, and holiday lights produce very different visits.

How to see an estate become a civic garden
- Read the terrace geometry
- Axes, stairs, walls, and clipped forms extend the mansion outdoors.
- Follow seasonal labor
- Look for propagation, trial beds, labels, and active horticulture behind the display.
- Give peacocks space
- They are free-roaming animals, not props or pets.
- Compare old and new
- The Garden Gateway deliberately changes how a historic estate welcomes visitors.
Good to know
Special events can require timed tickets and alter normal routes. Peacocks roam freely; do not feed or corner them. The mansion may have shorter access than the grounds.
