Kincaid Mounds State Historic Site

Mississippian platform mounds and village land along the Ohio River floodplain survive as a protected archaeological landscape viewed from an interpretive platform.

Kincaid Mounds State Historic Site

Artwork inspired by Joseph Yoakum

Kincaid was a major Mississippian civic and ceremonial center from roughly 1050 to 1400 CE, with large platform mounds, plazas, houses, defensive works, and agricultural communities connected through the Ohio and Mississippi river systems. Most of what matters is subtle topography, not an exposed ruin.

Visitors view the protected complex from an interpretive platform because climbing or entering the mound field damages archaeological deposits and crosses restricted land. Bring binoculars and use the diagrams to convert low earth forms into spatial relationships. The short visit is worthwhile when paired with Fort Massac, the Ohio River, or another southern Illinois landscape.

Use the diagram
Match mound numbers, plaza space, and settlement edge to the low forms in front of you.
Think in river networks
Connect Kincaid to transport, floodplain farming, exchange, and other Mississippian centers.
Honor the boundary
Remain at the public platform; distance protects deposits and respects Indigenous heritage.
Bring optical help
Binoculars and low-angle morning or evening light make subtle earthworks easier to distinguish.

Good to know

The roadside interpretive area and viewing platform are open daily from dawn to dusk. The mounds and adjoining private land are closed to entry and climbing. A small roadside pull-off serves the observation platform. Do not stop on agricultural roads or cross fences in search of closer views.
