John Michael Kohler Arts Center

Contemporary exhibitions, artist-built environments, performance, and the Arts/Industry program make a free museum where buildings and bathrooms belong to the collection.

John Michael Kohler Arts Center

Artwork inspired by Mary Nohl

JMKAC has spent decades taking artist-built environments seriously—places made outside conventional studio and museum systems that can combine architecture, obsession, daily life, and community response. Temporary exhibitions connect that stewardship to contemporary practice, while the nearby Art Preserve houses much of the environment collection in a separate building.

The Arts/Industry residency is equally distinctive: artists work inside Kohler Co. factories with industrial materials and skilled employees, complicating easy divisions between craft, manufacturing, and fine art. Do not skip the washrooms; each was commissioned as an immersive artwork, and using them is part of encountering the building rather than a novelty detached from the program.

Notice where art stops behaving like a portable object

Ask what preservation means
Artist-built environments lose context when moved; read how the center records site, maker, weather, and neighborhood.
Separate the two buildings
The Arts Center and Art Preserve are distinct destinations several miles apart, though both are free.

Good to know

The Art Preserve is not inside the Arts Center; it has its own address on Lower Falls Road and deserves separate time.
