Jimmy Carter National Historical Park

Plains High School, the Boyhood Farm, campaign depot, railroad corridor, and community landscape connect Carter’s rural formation to civil rights, agriculture, faith, diplomacy, and public service.

Jimmy Carter National Historical Park

Artwork inspired by Mattie Lou O’Kelley

The park uses Plains as evidence for understanding Carter’s formation rather than merely as a backdrop to his presidency. Plains High School, the campaign depot, and the railroad corridor connect education, faith, community networks, and public service, while the Boyhood Farm places agricultural life within Georgia’s racial and economic order.

Begin at the high school for context, then travel to the farm, where accounts of Carter family life must be read alongside the labor of Black tenant families who sustained the operation. Returning downtown afterward clarifies how a small community became a national political launching point. The sites form a dispersed circuit, and the Carter family residence is not open for ordinary interior visitation.

Quick guide

Do not stop downtown
The Boyhood Farm is necessary evidence for Carter’s language about race and work.
Closed interior
The family residence is not an ordinary house museum; focus on the public park sites.

Build the presidency from Plains outward

Orient at school
Plains High School supplies family, education, community, and political context before the dispersed sites.
Drive to the farm
Read family work beside the Black tenant labor that sustained the operation and shaped Carter’s recollections.
Return downtown
The campaign depot shows how a small-town network became a national political launch point.
Plan the circuit
Allow half a day and a car; the farm is not part of the compact downtown walk.

Good to know

Start at the high school for orientation, then drive to the farm before returning to the compact town center.
