Indiana Dunes State Park

A broad beach, landmark dune ridge, black-oak forest, prairie, wetland, and the 3 Dune Challenge pack a demanding ecological cross-section into one state park.

Indiana Dunes State Park

Artwork inspired by John Ottis Adams

The state park occupies one compact, dramatic section inside the larger Indiana Dunes landscape. Its three tallest named dunes rise behind the beach, and trails cross active sand, older wooded dunes, marsh edges, and prairie. The 3 Dune Challenge is marketed as a short achievement, but deep sand and repeated elevation make its 1.5 miles far harder than the number suggests.

Arrive early enough that parking and heat do not choose the day for you. For ecology, pair the challenge route with a flatter nature-center or birding walk; for swimming, evaluate the lake independently of trail conditions. The beach and pavilion can be busy while woodland paths feel entirely different. State and national park fees, passes, and rules are separate even though their boundaries interlock.

Quick guide

Decide the priority
Swimming, challenge hiking, birding, and habitat study require different timing and gear.
Respect deep sand
Mileage understates effort; carry water and pace climbs by temperature.

How to choose between beach and dunes

Decide the priority
Swimming, challenge hiking, birding, and habitat study require different timing and gear.
Respect deep sand
Mileage understates effort; carry water and pace climbs by temperature.
Add a flatter trail
Compare young open dunes with older forest or wetland habitat.
Know the boundary
State and national park entrances, passes, and facilities are not interchangeable.

Good to know

The property opens daily 7 a.m.–11 p.m. A higher out-of-state vehicle fee applies here than at most Indiana state parks, and the national-park pass does not substitute. Beach lots fill on summer weekends. Accessible beach access, observation areas, and facilities exist, but deep sand, stairs, and steep dune trails are strenuous.
