Illinois Beach State Park
Dunes, ridges and swales, black-oak savanna, prairie, marsh, and six miles of Lake Michigan shore preserve a rare coastal system beside metropolitan Chicago.

Artwork inspired by Alfred Caldwell
Illinois Beach protects the state’s last major undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline, where waves and currents move sand through beach, dune, ridge-and-swale, wetland, and savanna communities. Water level, storms, and erosion can redraw the edge between visits. The best walk crosses habitats perpendicular to shore rather than remaining on the open beach.
North and south units offer different access, and the broad park pin is not a useful arrival plan. Swimming conditions, rip currents, cold water, algae, and beach erosion require current judgment even on a calm day. The paved Zion Bike Trail and nature-center area provide alternatives when loose sand or weather makes shoreline travel unsuitable.

Quick guide
- Cross the gradient
- Move from beach through dune, swale, prairie, and oak savanna to see how inches of elevation change habitat.
- Read the lake today
- Check wind, waves, temperature, beach status, and erosion rather than relying on yesterday’s appearance.
How to make Illinois Beach State Park count
- Cross the gradient
- Move from beach through dune, swale, prairie, and oak savanna to see how inches of elevation change habitat.
- Read the lake today
- Check wind, waves, temperature, beach status, and erosion rather than relying on yesterday’s appearance.
- Choose the unit
- Use the official map to match north or south parking with the intended trail.
- Protect the dunes
- Enter only on established paths and keep dogs leashed away from sensitive nesting and restoration areas.
Good to know
The park’s day-use areas are open daily from early morning to sunset. Beach, nature-center, campground, concession, and lodge operations change seasonally and with lake conditions. Free day-use lots serve the north and south units. Enter the correct unit for the trail or beach you want; shoreline crowding peaks on hot weekends.
